As we wind down the most obtuse and disastrous year of our lives, Nick Timoniere has finally released his solo project Nameling. The track “Magic 8 Ball” enters with electronic drums to set the mood similarly to a Death Cab for Cutie song. There is an overall dark quality to the song but a clearly optimistic message thanks to the friend of the main character.
- The main character seems to be down on their luck about emotional issues that we’ve all be guilty of feeling. This arrangement of luscious low vocals, programmed drums, clean electric guitars and synths keeps us dancing through the story. But $73.50 later, you are still resonating with the main character as they experiment with fortunes and predictions in their New York adventure. The song brings us back to those days where we would wander with our friends and be stuck on simple dilemmas such as “which girls we would kiss in the fall”. Timoniere’s use of his references to early 2000’s Alt/Emo paint the settings beautifully relatable in the song while also providing a new and unique sound. It is the perfect rainy day or late night drive vibe leaving the listener wanting more as it caps off at the two minute mark.
